Health classes explained
Preferred Plus, Preferred, Standard Plus, and Standard: how these labels differ between carriers and what each means for your rates.
Carriers price term coverage by rate class. Terminology shifts slightly by company, but the structure stays consistent: Preferred Plus (sometimes Super Preferred or Elite), Preferred, Standard Plus and Standard, with table ratings for heightened risk. Smokers get a parallel tier set at higher costs.
What underwriters look at
Height-to-weight ratio, blood pressure and lipids, family history of early illness, personal medical history, medications, and lifestyle factors.
How to use the quote tool
The health assessment asks you to rate yourself fairly: Excellent maps to Preferred Plus, Very good to Preferred, Good to Standard Plus, and Average to Standard. The quote reflects your tier; the company confirms the actual class post-underwriting. Uncertain? Try two different tiers and compare results, letting underwriting make the final call. Overstating health doesn't lower your final premium—only makes the estimate less precise.
