How much life insurance do you need?
A worksheet and discussion of the math: how many years of income you need, which debts matter, education costs, and what insurance you already have.
The standard approach is to calculate income requirements for the remaining years and then subtract savings and existing coverage.
Coverage estimate
Total = income needed × remaining years + any debts + education for children − current savings and group coverage, rounded up.
Why those inputs
Income years. Most families choose ten to twenty years—roughly from now until children finish school or a mortgage is paid off.
Debts. For most households, a mortgage represents the biggest liability. Life insurance can be sized to cover what's owed if something happens to you.
Education. A rough estimate per child, in today's dollars. The actual cost will be higher in future years and varies by school type.
What you already have. Savings that could cover a gap, and group life insurance from an employer (if any).
Once you have a target number, the quote tool shows you what that amount actually costs from each carrier at your age and health level.
